Nothing says Christmas to me quite like watching 'The Muppets Christmas Carol'.
I watched it last night and rediscovered how much I loved it! Even though I have seen it loads of times before I still find myself laughing at the jokes, (sometimes even with anticipation of these jokes). I was truly in my element, I was so childish and it was great! I finished watching the film feeling very happy indeed and quite uplifted- which, of course, is the magic of the muppets.
It's a truly fantastic film with people and puppets matching together seamlessly, as well as songs like 'One More Sleep Till Christmas' and 'Wherever you find love'.
It has a mix of songs, dance routines, jokes and ice-skating penguins!
It also had beginning titles like 'Kermit the frog as Bob Kratchet' which really captures the fact that the muppets are in no way puppets controlled by people, but they really have personality and presence, (as most interviewers of Miss Piggy will tell you), you forget about the people underneath the magic, to the audience they are very talented acting frogs, pigs, rats and....blue things etc.
It is a great story for Christmas as it is but add in music and the muppets and you get a film that really defines Christmas, for me anyway.
Michael Caine is fantastic as Scrooge as he can convey the thoughts of the character with the slightest change in facial expression, it is only recently that I have been able to compliment Caine as before I never really cared about who played Scrooge, I was too busy looking at the wonderful characters, like Gonzo and Rizo, that I recognised.
After watching it I realised the scale of it all and the amount of puppets that Jim Henson's workshop would have had to make, because there were new characters, (not just the ones from the show), even though they were in the background.
I really do, truly, love this film as it is a great story to tell for Christmas and really get you in the spirit and it is so marvelously done!
I spent the rest of the night feeling very happy and more, (if possible), excited about Christmas because of it.
And finally, the last thought that I had from this film is;
'Why has Kermit not been nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Oscar?!'

A 'Titanic' Story
I recently watched 'Titanic' for the first time in ages, (the 1997 one, me thinks) and I forgot how much I liked it. But the idea that so many people mock it nowadays and say they hate it got me thinking about why they do. It has one of the most spoofed shots ever, but being spoofed is the biggest compliment a film can get.
It won a number of awards at the time and was a massive hit, it's become one of those films that people say they hate even if they haven't seen it and I wondered why films can get to that state, especially if they were as successful as this.
Not only did it show a new take on the voyage and make stars out of it's....stars, it revolutionaised effects. If you watch the effects now it doesn't seem like much cause the industry has moved on but it was great for it's time, no film had had such an extent of effects like this did.
I really like this film and I hate the fact that it's constantly mocked, becasue I hate the idea of a good film being put into one of those categories that makes people scoff. It's not a terrible film like some, yet people consider them side by side. Most people won't admit to liking it now cause people will insult you for liking it and it's a shame cause it's a good film you should watch at least once and to give it a chance.
I am not only defending the film cause the whole 'Titanic' tragedy facinates me, (morbid I know), but it truley is a film that has a solid storyline as well as good characterisation and it touches the audience emotionally.

The greatest story ever told!!
The greatest story ever told, in my opinion, is.... (drum roll).... 'Peter Pan'!
You have pirates, mermaids, Indians, Fairies and flying! What more could you want?!
I love the story of 'Peter Pan', it has to be one of my favorites. I can never get enough of it, I'd gladly collect everything to do with it. It's a great story cause, even with the magic and flying, it is still realistic cause the themes are based on real life- the fear of growing up being the obvious one.
I own the most recent 'Peter Pan' dvd which stars Jeremy Sumpter as Peter Pan, Jason Isaccs as the infamous Captain Hook and Rachel Hurd-Wood as Wendy. This is the only film that tells the original story and shows a boy playing Peter pan, as in 'Hook' they show him as a grown man in the form of Robin Williams.
I watched it over the weekend and remembered how much I loved it. It is only now that I remember that I watched it nearly every day for 2 weeks when I got it. I always watch it and immediately want to watch it again once it's finished, (though I don't, I have some restraint).
P.J. Hogan is the director. He has done amazingly! Depicting Neverland is a really hard thing to do but it looks stunning! Hogan produced sketches of what he wanted it to look like and the main element is that all of the colours should be so much more vibrant and vivid than that of the 'real' world.
This film follows the book closely and moreso follows Wendy's story and her feelings as the book, though many people don't know, was titled 'Peter Pan and Wendy' not just 'Peter Pan'. It explores the feelings that they have for each other and the obstacles that lie in their way, which does make it a slightly more grown-up version, though not enough that kids can't watch it. It really conveys the bittersweet ending to the story.
Jason Isaccs is fantastic as notorious Captain Hook! His performance and the banter between him and Peter really lift the film. Their relationship is great in this as it is purely about one winning over the other. Hook being the baddie does everything in his power to achieve this, thus he manipulates 'Tink', (who is a mix of CGI and live action, the actress is very expressive which is needed for a character that doesn't talk), and Wendy. It also shows how ruthless Hook is as he so easily kills other pirates when they annoy him.
This all leads up to a very special emotional and visual fight scene towards the end between Peter and Hook, the Lost Boys and the Pirates. Again, this scene really captures the essence of all of the characters.
Apart from the fantastic storyline and effects, the flying is first class, with a great stunt co-ordinator who really knows what he is doing. He had to train children, one of which was probably about ten, to be able to hold themselves horizontal with their backs completely straight and to stay in their correct positions for their flying.
Apart from all of the visuals, what makes this film truly amazing is the soundtrack. It has such a great effect on all of the scenes and 'gels' really well with the visual, it doesn't overpower the scenes and isn't something that you would miss, it has a great balance.
It's the type of soundtrack which you buy on c.d., (I have obviously), and keep the credits running at the end of the film just to hear it.
That was a very round about way of saying you have to see this film! I admit my judgment is probably swayed purely cause it's 'Peter Pan', but I would urge to see it nonetheless, even if you don't like it afterwards least you've given it a chance.
I really cannot say enough about this film, as you may have guessed. Even though I do love the other versions, like 'Hook', this film is the best as it does the story justice, this seems like it was just how Barrie pictured it.

Miss Naked Beauty
I watched the most recent episode of 'Miss Naked Beauty', it is a reality t.v. show hosted by 'How to Look Good Naked' Gok Wan and Myleene Klass. They are on a search to find an ambassador and model to help break the size 0 trend in fashion. They have taken a selection of real women with curvy figures to compete for the job.
I'm not really a big reality t.v. fan, I like some of them but I don't tend to follow too many religiously, (e.g. X-Factor or Big Brother). Though this show appealed to me, I think mostly because it has a nationwide cause not just some person looking for 15 minutes of fame.
The women are presented with challenges to help the judges decide, things like talking to the media and taking pictures that convey a message, e.g. 'I am an Ambassador of....'
It was really interesting to watch. The beginning titles convey what the show is about the most. It starts off with the girls dressed up like they are in a beauty pageant, with tiara's etc, very stereotypical. It then show close ups of people smudging their make-up and ripping their jewelery basically getting rid of the pageant-esc stuff and revealing them naked but still with their tiara's. I thought this was great opening titles! It really says that the goal and message is that we are all beautiful as ourselves and we don't need fancy clothes or make-up to make us pretty, which is the message often seen in today's society.
It still keeps the pageant theme but does it with 'real' women, you see this more at judging as the contestants descend from a flight of stairs to be judged.
I got really caught up in this as I like the idea of breaking the mould and the idea of being a size 0 scares me, the woman who wins will be tackling issues like anorexia and that we don't need to be tiny to be beautiful.
I think the programme done really well in conveying it's message but we shall see if the winner can truly make any difference.

Recent stuff.
I have just finished reading the first installment of a trilogy called 'The Black Magicians', the first book is called 'The Magicians Guild'. I did thoroughly enjoy this book and I'm gutted that I will have to wait until Christmas to get the rest of the books to read. It's about a world that is ruled by the king and the Magicians. The first book is about a young woman who is poor and lives in 'The Slums' part of the city, who discovers by chance that she has magical abilities, she does this by injuring magically one of the magicians. Thinking that she will be captured and killed for having abilities outside of the rich families, she goes on the run.
That was a brief description but it really is very good, cause it draws on a lot of modern day themes but is set in a different land and has the whole magical abilities thrown in. Subtly it deals with the issue of class. It really is fantastic.
Also I have watched the following recently;
'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'
'Ironman'
'Accepted'
and the t.v. show 'Heroes', which I finally managed to catch up on.
I enjoyed all of the above, though 'Heroes' and 'Ironman' were probably the best.
'Heroes' is fantastic because the twists and the overall plots and themes that go into it, much like the book above, it's ultimately about human nature, the abilities are a big part but it's more watchable with the powers being more of a situation to these characters rather than being a series that is purely about abilities as its focus. It is a bit like mini films every week.
'Accepted' was better than expected, (it's about a guy who can't get into any colleges so he makes his own), it sounds really bad but it wasn't really too predictable as you would assume, though I wouldn't add it to my DVD collection, (my brother might), it's still worth a watch, just once.
'Ironman' is amazing cause of the special effects but also cause the depth of the storyline, I finished watching it and just thought, 'Wow! That was so cool!!', which you may see me do a lot. But I can't find any flaws with it, not that I'd want to. I think that that is one way to see if it's a good film, that you don't come out searching in your head for something to winge about.
Finally, 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'. I was a bit disappointed as I thought it would be funnier though I did still like it. It was weird I watched it and thought that it was ok but a couple hours later I wanted to watch it again. I think it's a film that you need to watch a couple of times before you come to like it a bit. There was some really funny bits in it. I don't normally bother about Russel Brand but I did think he was good in this, he was quite witty when I watched the gag reel.
The other part that was interesting about this is some of the scenes seemed to have their dialogue improvised, I could only tell this from watching special features though.
Overall I enjoyed it more than I thought, but it also wasn't as good as I thought it would be, if that makes sense, if it doesn't say so and I'll be happy to try to elaborate.

Stuff!!
I was writing the t.v. show outline for Adam there and had problems saving it, sending it etc. It was then that I realised that the idea is normally the simplest part, its the technical stuff that causes problems, cause they can just decide to hate you! I think that this theory can also refer to filming, the idea's easy it everything that comes after it that's the hard part.
My sister just bought the special edition dvd of 'Sleeping Beauty', I hadn't seen it in ages and so I watched the pop-up version with her. I really enjoyed it, no matter how many times I see it it's still great! But most of Disney is, personally. I still love disney films, the classics mostly, it's went bit downhill recently.
I love the fact that it took so long for the animator's to make these films cause it shows the amount of effort that was put into them, I think now, some things are just too easy for people. I would say one of my favorite films is 'The Little Mermaid', this is a fantastic example of animation as it was the last ever film to use individually painted cells, meaning every part of it was hand painted, which is why all of the colours are so vibrant in it. Once they stopped the hand painting the colours became duller.
When I was a bit younger I considered becoming an animator, a few people suggested that I should. However I decided against it as I would rather I done my art for fun. It's a good thing i decided against it as, nowadays, it's mostly done on computers, the only art is really the concept drawings, so I'd be doing that cause I'm crap with computers.
So, in a roundabout way I guess I'm saying that, although I do still love cgi films, ('Toy Story'!), I really do miss the hand animated films cause there are some things that you just can't replace.

Erm....
erm...
well I suppose I should say something useful. About films and such.
I watched 'Some like it Hot' the other night, though I have never seen the beginning! I always miss it. But it is a really good and interesting film. What interested me about it the most is that two men could run, a lot, in heels! better than any woman can! Now if that's not impressive I don't know what is! They done a whole chase scene in them!!
I remember having an interesting discussion about Marilyn Monroe with my dad after watching this film. She is a good example about how people live on after they die, though in Hollywood this normally happens because they have had a mysterious death or numerous problems whilst living.
It's quit morbid that the world today remembers people because they may have committed suicide, why don't we ever remember the people that have done great things? We do occasionally, but the names you hear the most in conversations, if it was between the great person and the troubled one, you would hear the troubled one. I think that this is because ultimately a tragedy is more interesting.
Anyway... went off on a tangent there.
We watched 'Casablanca'. Personally, I didn't enjoy it much, I did almost fall asleep, (sorry Andy!), but I got confused at parts as I didn't know what they were talking about sometimes, that may have to do with the fact that I'm not really too interested in most of history, (first year teacher put me off of it, he was so dull!!).
I did enjoy being able to hear all of the quotes from it in their original context, though it was weird cause I'm so used to hearing them it sounds like the film was cheesy using these lines even though they used them first.
I will probably be shunned for not liking 'Casablanca' but I'm not too fussed, there's plenty of films that I haven't seen or don't like that people are surprised about. I quite enjoy being someone that goes against peoples initial thoughts of me. Tis FUN!! hehe.

well I suppose I should say something useful. About films and such.
I watched 'Some like it Hot' the other night, though I have never seen the beginning! I always miss it. But it is a really good and interesting film. What interested me about it the most is that two men could run, a lot, in heels! better than any woman can! Now if that's not impressive I don't know what is! They done a whole chase scene in them!!
